a half circle of lighted candles for Diwali

Diwali, also known as the Festival of Lights, is one of the most significant festivals celebrated by millions of people across India and the world. This vibrant festival symbolises the triumph of light over darkness, good over evil, and knowledge over ignorance. Diwali is marked by lighting oil lamps called diyas, bursting fireworks, decorating homes with rangoli (intricate patterns made from coloured powders), and enjoying feasts with family and friends. The festival holds deep cultural and spiritual significance for Hindus, Jains, Sikhs, and Buddhists, each observing the festival with unique customs and rituals.

Diwali is traditionally celebrated over five days, with each day having its own meaning and significance. People clean their homes, buy new clothes, and exchange gifts and sweets as part of the festivities. It’s also a time for worship, as many households perform pujas (prayers) to deities like Lakshmi, the goddess of wealth and prosperity, and Ganesha, the remover of obstacles.

Diwali serves as a reminder to let go of past resentments and embrace new beginnings. It is a time of joy, reflection, and gratitude, bringing together communities to celebrate the light within each of us. As the skies light up with fireworks, Diwali also emphasises the importance of family, togetherness, and the power of hope.
